Simran:Look, broadly, I'm doing okay. I'm not gonna lie. I recently went off the pill and my antidepressants So, you know, every day is a battlefield
Simran:as Jordan Sparks says so oh
Ryan:but standing in solidarity with you.
Simran:Thank you, you ally
Ryan:Ryan:
- You're welcome.
Ryan:Ryan:
[laughing]
Simran:Yeah, no, but doing well doing well. I'm fine. Um anyways how are you?
Ryan:Ryan:
Ryan:
Ryan:
- Umm… pretty good.
Ryan:I think overwhelmed by the world, you know,
Simran:Sure, yeah
Ryan:there's a lot going on right now.
Ryan:And also my to-do list is at a hundred items.
Ryan:But my email inbox is at zero.
Simran:Simran:
>> Totally, so you are better than me is what I'm hearing.
Ryan:So you...
Ryan:- Oh, so you are better than me.
Ryan:- So you win some, but you lose some.
Music:[music playing]
Simran:>> [BLANK_AUDIO]
Ryan:What's happening in the news, Simran?
Simran:>> Girlies aren't getting paid.
Simran:The girlies are not getting paid, and it's quite unsurprising to be honest.
Simran:Yeah, the gender pay gap is not ideal, and news came out and confirmed that.
Simran:So that was like very exciting.
Ryan:A really great interactive report by the Guardian Australia.
Simran:Simran:
Yes, we love The Guardian Australia
Simran:Give me a job, please.
Simran:But yeah, the national median base salary pay gap is 14.5%, which doesn't sound so bad, but it's definitely not great, hey?
Simran:Ryan:
Well, did you see the worst one?
Simran:No, tell me.
Ryan:Jetstar.
Simran:Ryan:
Simran:
What is it?
Ryan:Like 35% or something?
Simran:Simran:
That's crazy, and we won't be fact-checking.
Ryan:But it is true, right?
Ryan:Ryan:
And it's because there's so much like gender in like pilots versus flight attendants.
Simran:Totally, totally, totally, totally.
Ryan:Yeah.
Simran:My employer, no gender pay gap, well also I work for myself, so definitely no men, definitely no men.
Ryan:'Cause no men.
Ryan:Ryan:
Simran:
But the ones that really surprised me were Lorna Jane.
Simran:So the PAS group, now called Brand Collective, so that covers Pandora, Fast Future Brands,
Simran:which manages Valley Girl and Tempt and Forever New.
Simran:They were hitting above 50%. How crazy is that? That is literally for the girlies like yeah that's insane. I did get it just from ragtrader.com.au that's where the information is from but meanwhile Australia Brands: Sea Foley and Lorna Jane hit gender pay gaps of 44.5% and 37.1% respectively. Yeah.
Ryan:50%
Simran:Ryan:
Oroton 18.3%! That's a shame. I liked their bags.
Simran:And I don't know what information like what you want to do with that. It's all bad honestly but I actually wanted to bring up our gender pay gap. Yeah I'm referring to today when you literally stomped on my neck. I don't know if you heard our amazing intro song but uh it is by the one the only Seb Whitaker but I paid $50 for that intro song and uh noticeably you had to buy a USB for this recording, which I am so--
Ryan:Ours?
Simran:- I'm so grateful for, no, truly, you are a tech crew and I really appreciate that.
Simran:It was, how much again?
Simran:- $29.
Simran:- $29, $29, and I don't wanna be the math girlie here.
Simran:In fact, I won't be, but if you quick math that,
Ryan:That? That's a good point.
Simran:that's a gender pay gap, yeah.

Ryan:So, guess which private jet just landed in Singapore?
Music:[upbeat music]
Simran:which one what no that's a bit crazy because I've actually never heard of her flying in a private jet ever This is what she does, it's so true.
Ryan:Which one?
Ryan:Taylor Swift's.
Ryan:What?
Ryan:I know, she's just left Australia.
Ryan:No, she's flying in a private jet, ever.
Ryan:No, she famously does, famously.
Ryan:But yeah, I watched a video of her landing and then I watched a video of the cars with blacked out windows.
Ryan:Sure.
Simran:true allegedly because we don't want to be sued
Ryan:allegedly she was in them.
Ryan:so allegedly, but yes, she's in Singapore doing the massive.
Simran:um what's she doing then
Simran:I didn't go to yes um and i'm so glad you brought that up because i'd like to tell the listeners that um ryan went to the Taylor Swift concert and I did not and let me tell you
Ryan:Well, first of all, let's just acknowledge what a massively amazing concert night it was.
Simran:I wouldn't know.
Ryan:She is a massively talented artist, three and a half hours of music just nonstop hit.
Simran:[laughing]
Simran:I don't know.
Simran:Totally.
Simran:I heard she has a pee bucket.
Simran:That was the most interesting thing.
Ryan:What?
Simran:So apparently when people perform at concerts,
Simran:they can't run to the bathroom mid-concert,
Ryan:Of course.
Simran:so they have a bucket whenever they go down or behind something to change,
Ryan:That's what it's called.
Simran:and they just pee in the bucket.
Simran:Again, can't fact-check this, but I had this somewhere.
Simran:[laughing]
Simran:No, I kind of see it,
Simran:it obviously would be a bedazzled moment.
Ryan:A diaper I can imagine for her?
Simran:- On a diaper?
Simran:I can imagine for her.
Ryan:You take that back A pee bucket? I don't know, that's too much
Simran:[laughing]
Simran:- You take that back.
Simran:- A pee bucket.
Simran:- Do I love, I would rather,
Simran:I think I would rather a pee bucket than a diaper.
Ryan:Maybe she just has a fucking toilet down there
Simran:- Maybe you should.
Simran:- So true.
Simran:But when would she pee?
Ryan:Like when she jumps in into the water after the
Simran:Is that something that you saw live?
Simran:- For the surprise thing.
Simran:- Totally.
Simran:Which I wasn't there for again.
Simran:And I'll tell you why I wasn't there.
Simran:So let's go through the saga of getting to--
Simran:tickets for Taylor Swift, which I know is quite, like, triggering for a lot of Swifties out there.
Ryan:- For almost 30% of Australians.
Simran:Really? As in 30% of Australians are Swifties? Oh, true. Wow.
Ryan:- Really?
Ryan:- Tried to get tickets.
Ryan:Yeah.
Ryan:And only like 3% of Australians,
Ryan:like literally there was only capacity of like 3% of Australians.
Simran:Wow. Wow, I feel seen. I feel like I have my people.
Ryan:Yeah.
Ryan:Part of the 1%.
Simran:Yep, it just-- yeah. And that goes through.
Ryan:- Yeah, we just, yeah.
Ryan:- But look at you.
Ryan:Look at you, part of the 99.
Simran:Totally, totally, totally.
Ryan:- Totally.
Simran:The white man thought of the 1%! The day has come. July. Yes. And we are gearing up to get tickets.
Ryan:The white man part of the 1%.
Ryan:The day has come.
Ryan:- July.
Simran:I'm looking to get tickets from me, Ryan, another friend of ours, and we're all online. I did take a full work day basically. I didn't do any work. Totally. Totally, totally, totally, totally. So So we all know where our priorities are in this moment.
Ryan:I actually wasn't online. I was in a theatre watching frozen
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:So I'm online.
Simran:I'm like, so many screens are open.
Simran:Both of my colleagues, I only have two, um, people that I work with.
Simran:Both get tickets.
Simran:I'm like, okay, it's fine.
Simran:I'm fine.
Simran:I have tomorrow.
Simran:It's okay, right?
Simran:So I say in the group chat, so sorry, it didn't happen for us.
Simran:Don't worry about it.
Simran:We'll get it tomorrow because I'm a manifesto and I make things happen famously.
Simran:So the next day comes.
Simran:I'm ready.
Simran:I'm like, you know, chakras aligned.
Simran:I have meditated on it.
Simran:I'm like, okay, I'm mentally prepared to do this.
Simran:I'm doing my finger exercises.
Simran:You know, I'm ready.
Simran:You know, and the worst part was when like it like slightly lagged to refresh and you like think you're in and then it's like, no, actually let me slap you in the face with another reload.
Simran:Okay.
Simran:So we don't get the tickets, right?
Simran:And I'm upset about it.
Ryan:well you actually get in oh I do get in you do get in and it was only like 800
Simran:Oh, I do get in.
Simran:It's true.
Simran:It's true.
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:And I love Taylor, but like, you know, not that much.
Simran:It's okay.
Simran:I was like, it's fine because they'll have like another like sale of tickets like coming up, like I'll get it again.
Simran:I'm like, okay, I'm going to try every day, you know, and that's something that I really believe and I say to myself every day.
Simran:So I call up, um, the group chat, right?
Simran:And I'm talking to our other friend and I'm like, I'm so sorry.
Simran:Like it didn't happen.
Simran:It's like, she was trying as well.
Simran:And I'm like, you know, I'm like a little bit upset.
Simran:I'm like exhausted from the day, to be honest.
Ryan:- You worked really hard that day.
Simran:I was like tense all day.
Ryan:- No, I worked.
Ryan:- You did, you did.
Simran:No, I worked.
Ryan:And I acknowledge that.
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:Um, not on my actual job, but like I worked.
Ryan:- Not on my actual job, but like, I worked.
Simran:So much.
Simran:And we're chatting.
Simran:I'm upset.
Simran:Our friend is upset.
Simran:Um, noticeably Ryan pretty calm, pretty cool, pretty collected.
Simran:Um, and he says, yeah, so sad, so sad.
Simran:Actually, I have to go to lunch.
Simran:I'm so sorry.
Simran:I've got to go.
Ryan:And what you had missed was that after Frozen Junior, I was waiting in the lobby of the drum theatre in Dandenong and my friend who I was with just pulled out their phone and just went to the website and got in, in about five minutes, one of us trying just got in and then we were like, well, you're in.
Simran:I was like, okay, I'm gonna fuck myself.
Simran:Sure.
Simran:It's not what happened! Wow, this is new information.
Simran:Wow, and then we were like, well, you're in. Wow. Wow.
Ryan:And one of us anticipated getting tickets and I was with four friends at the time and so naturally we're all staring at the fucking golden ticket and it's like, well, it's,
Ryan:you know, buy four right now.
Simran:Yeah, anyways, so I was throwing up and shitting myself at that time
Ryan:And I had locked in my 88.
Simran:Yeah studying I love that for you, um Ryan actually did not I was not privy to any of this information
Ryan:No, I was going to tell you, I was, I was trying to find the right time, the right moment.
Simran:Totally and then you didn't
Simran:Sure, um, I guess the right moment came for you it appeared you manifested that yourself
Ryan:Handed that moment to me, yeah.
Simran:- Totally.
Simran:I was at Ryan's show, Full Cream.
Simran:I'm talking to one of Ryan's friends, Taylor.
Simran:And Taylor and I were talking about the fact that we didn't get tickets.
Simran:And we were like really upset about it.
Simran:And I was like, oh my God, isn't this like the worst?
Simran:Like, you know, I tried so hard, like I'm so upset.
Simran:Like I have so many friends that have gotten it.
Simran:And she's like, yeah, oh my God, like Ryan is so lucky.
Simran:And I was like, I was like, no, like Ryan didn't get any.
Ryan:I was like, uh, no, like Ryan didn't get any.
Simran:And she was like, "No!"
Simran:And I was like, "No!"
Simran:'Cause I was getting the tickets for it, so like, and we were on the call, and no he didn't.
Simran:And he's like, "No, I think you are."
Simran:And then Taylor looks like a weight, like, over me, and I was like, "Okay, this motherfucker."
Simran:And I look back, and Ryan's had this whole conversation, and he's looking at me like he's ready to run.
Ryan:And he was looking at me like, "Are you ready to run?"
Simran:And he's ready to run. And, correct.
Ryan:I was, I was, because I was trying to find the right moment, you know, like, I was going to take you out for dinner, like, really, I was going to, like, tell you that information.
Simran:And I was like, "I was gonna like, just tell you that information."
Ryan:Yeah, yeah.
Simran:Could you take a break up here?
Ryan:Because it's like a breakup, you know?
Ryan:I know, it is.
Ryan:What we went through.
Ryan:Yeah, absolutely.
Ryan:Yeah.
Ryan:Yeah.
Ryan:Well, thank you for sharing.
Ryan:I'm really grateful that we've managed to push through.
Simran:Totally. Seems like I really care about it.
Ryan:I do.
Ryan:- Well, you know, my tickets almost went to you.
Simran:Yeah, true. I, Ryan got...
Ryan:- Right before Taylor, and in the will, I wrote a scene where we'll take the tickets.
Simran:I wasn't hoping it was COVID. I wasn't not hoping.
Simran:[laughter]
Ryan:- So good. Yeah, so good. Yeah, you know, she just, she sings a little hard out, just keeps going.
Ryan:Bad blood, the fire, the fucking fire and bad blood. But I'd say something very controversial,
Ryan:but then I was like, I'm not going to say it. I don't think we had the best surprise songs out of her Australian tour.
Simran:Say it.
Ryan:- What was the surprise song?
Ryan:- We had teardrops on my guitar.
Ryan:- Uh-huh.
Ryan:No, Sydney Night 3 got exile, but like Sydney Night 3 got exile. I'm like I want fucking exile you know like someone else got would have could have should have and
Simran:- Oh my God, I don't have fucking anxiety.
Simran:- Yeah, and that's so--
Ryan:Look I have friends who love debut or whatever teardops on my guitars on
Simran:I love tear-dubs my guitar. So you had you had come back here from red and daylight from lover. Yeah
Ryan:And look that's great
Ryan:Yeah, and look they lights great I do love lover but they got exiled
Simran:Yeah, and nobody's
Ryan:And like, they got exile.
Simran:No, 'cause they actually got exiled.
Ryan:- No, 'cause they actually got the vibe.
Simran:Like, I want exile.
Ryan:- Like, I'm on exile.
Simran:Yeah.
Ryan:Like what, I got debut in red,
Ryan:and other people out here getting multiple folklore songs?
Simran:Yeah.
Ryan:Like, excuse me.
Simran:Like, excuse me.
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:Excuse me.
Ryan:Excuse me.
Ryan:- How do you?
Simran:How do you think that she's going to incorporate her new album into the tour?
Ryan:- Well, you know how she's doing the fucking mashups constantly?
Simran:Well, you know who that is.
Ryan:Well, the thesis is that she's trying to just jam everything that she wants to get in into like a mashup,
Ryan:shit it out, cut the surprise songs as soon as "Tortured Poets" come out.
Simran:- And then, and then, yeah, replace.
Ryan:But very interesting.
Simran:- Very interesting.
Simran:- Yeah.
Simran:Did you know that her last show is in December?
Simran:Again, not fact-checking that, but somebody told me that.
Simran:Yeah, and honestly, I think that's what is keeping Travis, Kelsey, and her together.
Simran:They don't see each other that often,
Simran:so like, you can't really get to know each other, you know?
Simran:And I love a sporty man,
Simran:more than anything I do, actually, famously.
Simran:But I, um...
Simran:I like them because they're a little...
Simran:I feel smarter than them.
Ryan:They got hit a lot in the head, you know?
Simran:They get hit a lot in the head, you know?
Simran:No, they do.
Ryan:No, they do.
Simran:Yeah, exactly.
Ryan:They do.
Ryan:Well, she probably likes that she has a bigger lexicon than him, you know?
Ryan:I know.
Ryan:Can we just say colors though?
Ryan:The VIP tent that we had, okay, right?
Ryan:Other nights they had fucking Albanese, Katy Perry, Travis Kelsey, you know who I have?
Simran:Yeah, Katy Perry, that is crazy, true.
Ryan:Ali Dali.
Simran:My other qualm with the Taylor Swift era's tour ticket fiasco is that recently I found out after hearing the painstaking backstabbing news that you didn't get me tickets and you got it with a different group but I recently heard through my brother
Simran:who has a wife and kid that his wife is going to Taylor Swift and guess who she's bringing? My nephew! My 12 year old nephew! My brother's wife is bringing my 12 year old nephew to Taylor Swift in Singapore and I was bamboozled by the
Ryan:where do you stand in like the succession plan like are you first in line
Simran:I'll fight them I will I think it is like maybe like two others but like that's just an obstacle you know and you have challenges in life. No totally I should I think it is too um you know but what if he got sick you know just like a little tummy ache and that'll build character he wasn't even alive like for most of the eras like why I don't understand what he'll do there it was the same energy of um you know like the boyfriends there that I was like why are you
Ryan:Well, you should go to Singapore this week.
Ryan:Oh my god, the boyfriends that know literally, although the boyfriend next to me, not mine,
Simran:no they don't need the boyfriend next to me yeah
Ryan:he knew all the words and he was like more into it than the girlfriend and I was like good for you, bro.
Simran:oh really oh I love that wow and that's allyship right there beautiful
Ryan:Yeah.
Ryan:He was doofing during folklore.
Ryan:I was like, okay.
Simran:so something's happening in that relationship and I'm concerned about them [laughs]
Music:[upbeat music]
Chapters:Broadly deep. Ooh.
Ryan:So someone, I believe you got something, something very interesting for us to deep dive into.
Music:[upbeat music]
Ryan:to.
Simran:It's so true, I'm going to dive on in.
Ryan:I'm on in. Yup, go on. Well, I was. That's a strong open.
Simran:Well I was reading the other day about a woman who fucked a dolphin, yep.
Simran:Well I just didn't really understand it but her name is Margaret Howe Lovett and she is an American former volunteer naturalist from St. Thomas US Virgin Islands.
Simran:But yeah in the 60s she took part in a NASA funded research project, yeah, NASA funding You know and basically
Simran:the whole research project was like attempting to teach a dolphin to understand and mimic human speech and this particular dolphin's name was Peter. As a child apparently she was inspired by a book called Miss Kelly about a cat who communicates with humans and so she said say less let's do it like let's go with dolphins then and basically while volunteering at this like lab she met like another neuroscientist. Yeah she was volunteering at labs can you I don't - I didn't realize that people could do that.
Simran:- This is the sixties, it was a different time.
Simran:But Margaret was like besties with Peter and Peter was an adolescent dolphin.
Simran:And apparently he frequently had sexual urges which frequently disrupted his lessons,
Simran:like his English lessons.
Ryan:I don't know, English lessons?
Simran:Yeah, so he had to be taken,
Simran:like they were trying to teach dolphins English.
Ryan:See, that should be the craziest part of this story.
Simran:[laughing]
Simran:- Basically, PETA, whenever he got these like,
Simran:sexual urges, had to be moved to the other tank where the other female dolphins were,
Simran:and like, that's when, essentially,
Simran:he would relieve himself with the dolphins.
Ryan:with the dolphins? Yeah. Consensually? Because I've heard allegations about dolphins. Yeah.
Simran:I've heard, no, I have too.
Ryan:Okay. But dolphins are quite concerning creatures.
Simran:And I'm not at liberty to say.
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:Oh, absolutely, yeah.
Simran:And that needs to be set, right?
Simran:Basically, she was like, it wasn't sexual on my part.
Simran:Centruis, perhaps, it seemed to me that it made the bond closer with PETA.
Simran:Not because of the sexual activity,
Simran:but because of the lack of having to keep breaking,
Simran:and that's all that it really was.
Simran:I was there to get to know PETA, that was part of PETA.
Simran:It would just become a part of what was going on.
Simran:Like an itch.
Simran:Just get rid of the scratch,
Simran:and we would be done and move on.
Simran:So basically, she started like, relieving him
Simran:and wanting to move up and down, essentially,
Simran:and it would interrupt his lessons.
Simran:And like, I'm an efficient Kelly myself,
Simran:but like, that's a little too efficient.
Simran:And the weirdest part is, is that, okay,
Simran:so like all of this failed, basically.
Simran:Nobody, like no dolphin was taught English, like failed.
Simran:PETA got moved to another tank and then committed suicide.
Ryan:What the dolphin killed itself how
Simran:What?
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:The dolphin killed itself.
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:Probably because it missed Margaret.
Ryan:No, how
Simran:Oh.
Simran:Again, not a fact-checking podcast.
Ryan:Wow, I didn't know they could
Simran:Yeah.
Simran:No, but it's actually very sad that it killed itself.
Ryan:That's really sad but
Simran:That's really sad.
Simran:Yeah, because it apparently got moved to a tank that.
Simran:Oh my god, how does that even-
Ryan:fish I dropped a door on its tank so I just had a door leaning against the wall which fell on the tank but that there was half a tank
Ryan:kind of like shook the tank a little and it just turned into powder in front of me.
Simran:Powder? Wow. Yeah the most shocking part is that so Margaret stayed on this island where the research lab was. I think so. And basically she married somebody else, a photographer who photographed their research with Peter.
Ryan:- Powder?
Ryan:This is post his suicide.
Simran:And then they later moved back into the dolphinarium and converted it into their family home.
Simran:And together they had three daughters.
Simran:Again, this is all from Wikipedia, so I don't know if this is true or not,
Simran:but imagine if it is like a traitor!
Simran:Yeah, no, actually insane.
Simran:And that's what happens when science goes too far.
Ryan:Well okay, so on the note of inter-species communication, right, you've heard of artificial intelligence. So they're using AI to try and communicate with like other species. So whales,
Ryan:sperm whales, with their cliques and their moans in there, you know whatever. But so they're using AI to try and, like, translate these sounds, because, like, humans
Simran:- Wow.
Simran:- Yeah.
Ryan:AI. Um, but so the drama is, it was this massive article. There's this Institute called the SETI Institute, um, basically like pioneering research into using AI to translate whale language. And it's this whole think piece from the Atlantic, really stunning, where they're just like, what do we say? Like, what's the first thing we say to whales? You know,
Ryan:and because we can't fact check the first thing we say to whales, it's like, are we going to accidentally tell them like oh my god run away there's a hunter coming
Ryan:after you you know and because like we have inflicted trauma upon whales you know like history and so how like maybe the first thing we should say is sorry but then it's like if you say sorry you know the next thing you're gonna be like is how can I make your life better and this whole article is like but the problem is like if we ask the whales what what do you want you know they're gonna say a little less ocean shipping you know a little less harpooning you
Ryan:and but we already know but we already know we shouldn't be doing that you know and if the whales ask us it's like well now it's worse because they've explicitly asked us you know well it's definitely sorry like a massive sorry but like you know before we get to that point of saying sorry like I think there's so much and this is like a broader thing before you ever apologize for something. I think you actually have to make the problem.
Simran:and then what and then we just stop harping but we already know we shouldn't be doing that so true so if the whales ask us it's like well now it's worse because they've explicitly asked us yeah that's true okay so what do you think that we should say first well it's definitely sorry for sure like a massive sorry yeah
Ryan:Like you have to do the work of making.
Simran:I don't know how realistic that is for like people to like already do the work before apologizing because I think like apologies like are terrible.
Ryan:Well, and I just feel like that's so many apologies, it's like we should hold ourselves to our highest standard of apology and do at least some modicum of work before to prove
Simran:okay i'm with you on that but I don't think it needs to be like super tangible work I think it can be like coming up with a plan like for it to work out after you know like I just don't like
Simran:packaged up in the first steps of healing, whatever issue.
Ryan:I hear you, but then, I think in an ideal world.
Ryan:because it is the easiest thing to do you know and so when we set an apology as the goal all that happens is an apology which does
Simran:I don't think that's always
Ryan:the whales.
Simran:- No, I don't think so either.
Ryan:And like, we have to do the work and then we can apologize.
Ryan:And I don't know.
Ryan:I feel like that personal belief just holds me to a higher standard.
Simran:So you're better than everyone? Is what I'm hearing?
Ryan:Standards are really important.
Ryan:No, I just, I just don't apologize.
Simran:I just don't apologize.
Ryan:[laughing]
Simran:You heard it here first.
Ryan:- You're first.
Music:[upbeat music]
Simran:Okay, let's wind up bitches. Um, thanks so much for listening to our first ever podcast.
Music:[upbeat music]
Ryan:We should do a checkout
Simran:Okay, what's our check out?
